This week was Week 2 for the Harlem Renaissance Cafe with 5th grade. We focused on poetry this week. They listened to some poets and then started writing their own poetry (inspired by what they had listened to, of course).
I helped our Technology Integration Specialist and a 3rd grade teacher with an Author Study this week. Students picked an author and then researched their author using sites I selected and added to our school Symbaloo page. After researching the authors, they created a Tellagami or a Facetalker about their author using the iPads. You can see some of the finished projects here.
I read That is Not a Good Idea! by Mo Willems to my book award classes (K – 2). I shared a clip from a Buster Keaton movie with all K – 2 classes and talked about how this Willems book is like a silent movie. Kindergarten students wrote a recipe for soup after reading the book and checking out. If you’ve never read That is Not a Good Idea! – soup plays an important role in the story, so a soup recipe totally makes sense.
5th grade Media Technology students created avatars using the following websites: DoppelMe , Photos Share Avatar Generator, and Lego Yourself. We talked about why it is a good idea to use avatars instead of real photographs online and then they had fun creating their virtual selves. I saw them two times this week, so we also started a series of lessons using the iPads…we are working on a writing about “our favorite time of day” using Pages on the iPad.
I also got to do another Book Tasting this week (scroll down to read about it)…this time with a 3rd grade class.
Busy, but overall, a great week!
