2014 – 2015 Week 8

This week was more Global Cardboard Challenge with my 5th graders and during Makerspace Moments, as well as more Mo Willems with Kindergarten.

A couple of classes at my school started participating in the Global Read Aloud this week. I am working directly with a 1st grade class (we are doing a Peter H. Reynolds author study). We read The North Star by Reynolds on Monday and then students wrote about and drew a picture of what they want to be when they grow up. We have connected with a Kindergarten class in Colorado and on Thursday, we Skyped with them to meet them and to hear about what they want to be when they grow up. We will continue our connection throughout GRA – I’m looking forward to it!

5th grade Media Technology students are finally finished with Digital Passport stuff. This week, we used the app Doodle Buddy to create online posters for our upcoming Fall Festival. You can take a look at them here. We also produced the first podcast of the year. Right now, I am writing the script and just grabbing a couple of early finishers to read it. After they learn about Garageband, it is my hope that they will take over the podcast and do it themselves. We shall see!

On Friday, we celebrated Auggie’s birthday! Auggie is the main character in Wonder. I have two 3rd grade classes who are reading it as their classroom read aloud right now and we had birthday parties for Auggie on Friday. We listened to music from the book (I created a Spotify playlist); we ate Rice Krispy Treats (very allergy friendly); and we wrote kind things about each other on a Wonder form. I celebrated last year with a class and I’m so glad we could do it again this year! Kids LOVE LOVE LOVE that book (so do I)!

On Saturday, we participated in the 3rd Annual Star Wars READS Day! Each year, a few schools in my district get together to plan Star Wars READS Day. We hold our celebration at a local educational toy store. We encourage kids to dress up, we have snacks, there is story time, and Star Wars characters even show up for pictures! It is a lot of fun each year. You can check out pictures here.

It was a busy, but FUN week! How was your week?
