February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, so I thought that instead of the usual Valentine’s or LOVE theme, we would go with TEETH this month. I was inspired by the fact that a local dentist was going to come speak to our 1st grade. Every year he comes and brings little bags with a toothbrush, floss, and toothpaste for the entire grade level. I was going to see if I could have some of those bags to give to my story time friends, but the dentist got postponed because of all the crazy snow and ice we had last week. Filing that idea away for next year 🙂
Here is what we did for this month’s story time:
I created a teeth themed playlist on Spotify.
We had teeth shaped nametags.
I gave each student a piece of this flannel board activity and they came up one at a time and put their piece under the sad tooth or the happy tooth.
I read Whose Teeth are These? This is a great interactive, non-fiction book. Kids try to guess the animal based on the teeth before turning the page. Some of the pictures are of kinda scary animals (tiger, rattlesnake, etc.), but they seemed to love it, especially my boys.
Other books I pulled to read were Maisy, Charley, and the Wobbly Tooth by Cousins and Sweet Tooth by Palatini. I read Sweet Tooth to my friends at the apartment complex, because I have older kids who come to that most of the time and that book is funniest for older kids.
The craft was to make a mouth full of teeth. The idea came from this website.
Finally, their snack was a bag of teeth, toothbrushes, and cavities (marshmallows, stick pretzels, and chocolate chips) 🙂
