Week 20

Week 20! Report cards for the 2nd 9 weeks went home this week…every year seems to go by faster than the one before it. I just can’t believe we are almost into February and that we are into the 2nd semester. Jeez!

This week, I started a project with one of our teachers using the 30 Hands app. I LOVE this FREE app. Our Technology Integration Specialist introduced it to me. It is VERY easy. Just like Photostory, except for the iPad. For this project, each student had to write about 2 green emotions (glad, calm, excited, etc.) and 2 red emotions (sad, angry, embarrassed, etc.); take a picture of themselves looking like those emotions; and record themselves sharing about a time when they felt a certain way. We do this project every year using Photostory and I was so glad to be able to try something different.

I finished announcing our author visit (Matthew Holm) and reminding 3rd – 5th graders about South Carolina Children’s Book Award Nominee Reviews.

I started sharing the South Carolina Picture Book Award Nominees with Kindergarten and a few 1st and 2nd grade classes. The first book I read to them was One Cool Friend by Toni Buzzeo; illustrated by David Small. SUCH a good book. Love this book for inference, vocabulary, and for the twist at the end. After reading the book, I had them move around a little by pretending to be penguins, a big block of ice, a big block of melting ice, and then a turtle (secret yoga). We also visited the penguins at SeaWorld in Orlando.

My new group of 5th grade Media Technology students are working on their Digital Passport.

I helped with a professional development session for our teachers about CCSS and Text Complexity. That sounds fun, right? Right.

My big students started class this week. I teach adjunct at the University of South Carolina. I took a little break and now I’m back. I teach Children’s Literature on Wednesday evenings to undergraduates who hope to be teachers in an elementary school one day. This first week was introductions and going over the syllabus. We’ll start having big fun next week.

The most exciting thing that happened this week was that I FINALLY completed the #nerdcott challenge! This feat deserves a blog post all by itself…coming soon!

I hope you had a super week!
