Week 9 has come and gone – here’s what we did in the NPES Learning Commons:
I started my “favorite author” unit with Kindergarten – all MO, all the TIME! This unit will take me to Book Fair in November. I kicked it off by sharing some facts about Mo Willems and introducing students to the Pigeon. I will introduce a different Mo book each week and then students will visit a center. The centers are:
1. Draw the Pigeon on the iPad (we used the Doodle Buddy app)
2. Watch a video of Mo Willems books (got the video from the public library)
4. Explore www.pigeonpresents.com
5th grade Media Technology students watched one of the newest Kid President videos and then brainstormed ways they can celebrate #socktober. We decided to collect socks for the homeless, so they made posters to advertise in Paint and PowerPoint.
I started a new program this year called PAWS for Reading. I am encouraging students to meet me at a local pet shelter after school one day a month to read with the animals. We started it this week and I LOVED it. We will be meeting once a month and I cannot wait for the next time. I got the idea from something I read over the summer about a similar program and wanted to do it. It’s supposed to help the students with reading fluency (obviously), but it also calms the shelter animals. I saw this firsthand…it really works.
I also started promoting our state book award program this week ( FINALLY).
There you have it – how was your week?
