Weeks 27 – 29! Bildner, April, and more!

The past few weeks in the NPES Learning Commons have been very BUSY! We have been learning about Phil Bildner (visiting NPES on April 10) and getting ready for all of the other wonderful things that happen in April (School Library Month, Poetry Month, etc.)

To help get ready for Bildner, I’ve set up some Phil Bildner Centers –

*Read a Book by Phil Bildner – I put out a bunch of books by Bildner as well as other books about baseball. I also put out some trading cards that students could look at and “read” while at the center.

*Sign your Name – We put out a big piece of paper for each student to write their name on to welcome Bildner to our school.

*Build a Bridge – The book Twenty-One Elephants is all about the Brooklyn Bridge and how elephants helped convince everyone that it was safe to cross. Kindergarten students read this book and then tried to build their own bridge using legos.

I have visited every classroom sharing this Prezi with them. I think we are all ready and excited for Bildner’s visit!

I have been teaching a lesson about figurative language with 4th grade using the Katy Perry song, Firework. I stumbled on the lesson plan here. Basically, I reviewed some figurative language terms with the 4th graders (after asking the teachers which terms they wanted me to focus on) then I passed out lyrics to Firework and we listened to the song while following along with the lyrics and listened for examples of figurative language. Students underlined what they found with various colors of crayons, highlighters, etc. After they finished, we went through the song to find and discuss our examples and then we took a quick “quiz” on the SMARTBoard to see what they could remember. They did a great job!

We kicked off our 2013 READO game! READO is a great way to share everything that is going on in April with our students and families. Each box has something they can do during the month of April to celebrate. After they get 5 in a row, they can bring their board in for a small prize. We are celebrating (through READO) Draw a Bird Day, DEAR Day, Poem in Your Pocket Day, Phil Bildner, Blowfish Baseball Reading Rewards Program, and more! What a FUN month!
