Week 23 – Lessons and Digital Learning Day #DLDay

Another week in the books!

I read SCPBA (South Carolina Picture Book Award) nominee 1 Zany Zoo by Degman to Kindergarten and 1st grade classes. I tied it in with a rhyming words/word families mini-lesson. After reading the book, I asked them what kinds of words they heard a lot of (the answer being rhyming words, of course!). We threw around some examples we heard and then they got into groups to sort these cards I found via Pinterest.

5th graders started research on people from the Harlem Renaissance. After they complete their research, they will create a Prezi about their person.

The highlight of the week was our Digital Learning Day Celebration. Digital Learning Day is a national celebration and this is the first year we have participated. Digital Learning Day was on Wednesday (2/6). That was a half day for our students, so our celebration was from 8am – 11:30am (students were dismissed at 11:40am). I invited the Lexington County Public Library to come and show kids and teachers how to load eBooks from the public library to their devices. The Learning Commons Team was there to show kids and teachers how to load eBooks from our school library on their devices. The coolest part of our celebration (I think) was the Technology Petting Zoo from the South Carolina State Library. Two staff members from the library came with all kinds of cool gadgets (iPads, SURFACE, XBox….things that I had not even seen or played with!) that the kids could use, play with, explore, ask questions about, etc. THEY LOVED IT! Most of our students came in at some point throughout the day. I had a sign up sheet in our workroom for teachers to sign up their classes. 2 classes could sign up at one time for a 15 minute slot. I think next year, I will try to have longer time slots…I think 20 minutes would be perfect. There isn’t much else I would change about the day – maybe allow for a time for teachers only and a time for parents only. When all of the kids were in there, it was hard for the adults to get to touch and explore! All in all, it was a great day.

I hope you have a WONDERFUL week and a very lovely Valentine’s Day, readers!
