Week 2 @NPESLearningCommons!

Week 2 in our Learning Commons!

*Almost everyone has checked out at least one book. We are very busy in the mornings and afternoons with kiddos coming in and exchanging books they have read the night before – LOVE THAT!

*Kindergarten students are still talking about taking care of library books. First, I review what they learned from Mr. Wiggle last week. Then, we watch this wonderful book care video. I am so thankful for the librarian who made that video! I use it every year. After watching and discussing, I have them come up one at a time to sort “yes, yes” and “no, no” items on this SMARTBoard activity (thank you Kelly Butcher for sharing!).

*I showed this video to as many classes as I could remember to show it to.

*5th grade Media Technology students created Avatars this week using a few sites. Our TIS and I also did a mini-lesson on cyber safety with this because we would rather have them use an Avatar than an actual photograph of themselves on any site that they have to create a profile for. They really loved doing this. It also helped to reinforce where and how to safe documents. Sites we used were: DoppelMe, LegoYourself, ClayYourself, and WimpyYourself.

*I spent the week promoting National Library Card Sign Up Month. We want students and teachers to show us their public library card. As we see their cards, we are marking them off on class lists we have. If a class has 100% of students (and teacher) having a public library card, they will earn a prize. They have all month to show us their card. Lots of students were kind of sad and said “I don’t have one of those!” (I would hold up my library card when telling them about the promotion). I said to them, well, it’s a good month to go get one! AND, it’s free! I love, love, love my public library and I want them to love it too! If you don’t have a public library card, you need to go sign up for one too! NOW!

Next week, we will be celebrating The Dot. I LOVE this book and this celebration. Last year was the first year that I participated. Can’t wait to be a part of it again!

Have a GREAT Sunday!

  1. Lori June says:

Valerie, I’m curious: What are Media Technology students?

  2. Hi Lori! Media Technology students are 5th graders who have selected “Media Technology” as their “major.” Our 5th graders can choose Art, Musical Theater, or Media Technology as a major. Then, they go to that major during Related Arts for 3 – 4 times each week. I see my kids 3 times a week and I co-teach with our Technology Integration Specialist. We teach them various ways to present information using technology. They also help with our news show.
