It’s been a fun week in our library! It was another short week for me, because I went to the Judy Freeman workshop on Monday. Judy never fails to give me ideas I can use right away. I just love her. Plus, it is always nice to spend a day with my library friends.
At school, we finished voting for our favorite South Carolina Book Award nominees – our winners were: We Can’t All Be Rattlesnakes and Panda Kindergarten. I’ll find out at the SCASL Annual Conference in a couple of weeks which books are the winners for the whole state.
We celebrated Dr. Seuss’ Birthday this week with a photo booth – an idea I’ve seen on Pinterest and in magazines. I guess it is all the rage at weddings and other parties these days. My assistant had one at her daughter’s birthday party, so she brought in their backdrop (a shiny gray fabric that worked really well as the background) and we had various Seuss-props set up for students to wear: boas for Thing 1 and Thing 2, Cat in the Hat hats, Lorax mustache on dowels for them to hold in front of their face, a red frame for them to pose behind, Horton elephant ears, and daisies. The pictures are SO CUTE! We did the photo booth with every grade level. With my fixed classes (K – 2), we watched a quick informational video about Dr. Seuss (I had them share one “new to them” fact after watching) and then we watched either Justin Bieber read The Cat in the Hat or Tim Tebow read Green Eggs and Ham (did you know that 1st and 2nd graders think Bieber is lame??? I had no idea…). After checking out their books, they got to either go to a computer and explore Seussville, use an iPad or iPod to play Dr. Seuss’ Band, or make a torn paper Cat in the Hat. Times like this I wish I had more devices…kids really acted like they got the short end of the stick if they ended up with torn paper art and not something having to do with technology. In a way, I suppose they did, I realize that tech stuff is more fun that art stuff, but in the end, they all did a great job no matter what activity they worked on and I think they all had fun. Kids randomly selected a number and they did whatever activity went with the number they got. I also brought in some snacks for the staff throughout the week – green eggs and ham on Tuesday (pretzels, white chocolate discs, and green m&ms – looked a lot like this) and funfetti cookies on Friday (for his actual birthday…just sugar cookies with colorful sprinkles and the new 100th anniversary/Happy Birthday Oreo cookies. Beware – they smell like birthday cake and are VERY tempting!). I also sent out an email with some links and such to teachers with ideas on ways they could celebrate Seuss in their classroom.
Now we are moving on to our author visit – BROD BAGERT! My plan is to read one of his books each week for the next month (his visit is April 3) and then have poetry centers set up. Kids will rotate each week and visit a different center (so that I don’t have kids feeling like they are missing out on something – see above). Still formulating what the centers are going to look like, but I know I’ll have a listening center and a computer center. More on that later!
