Back to School Favorites

The new school year is here – day 2 with students for me!

At the beginning of each school year, I like to read books ABOUT books and reading to my students. I also read books that are good for learning about how to take care of a book and books about how to behave in a library. I thought I would share some of my favorites (and the grade level I share them with) with you –

Kindergarten

Wild About Books by Judy Sierra (I have been showing the iPad version this year to my students)

Mr. Wiggles Book by Paula Craig (after reading it, I have a bookbag with things like water, crayons, glue in it – I say that Mr. Wiggles left his bookbag in the library and we are going to find out if what is in it is GOOD for books or BAD for books)

I Took My Frog to the Library by Eric Kimmel (in the past I’ve done some sort of technology-project about library behavior with them, like a podcast or photostory)

1st Grade

Library Lion by Michelle Knudsen (we share ideas about what would happen if a lion came into our library)

Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Book by Lauren Child (after a discussion about taking care of our library books, we make bookmarks to use throughout the year)

2nd Grade

Library Dragon by Carmen Agra Deedy (we have a discussion about library rules based on the Library Dragon’s poster at the end of the story)

Book Eating Boy by Oliver Jeffers (we have a discussion about taking care of our books – we don’t eat them, course! – then we make a bookmark to use throughout the year).

What are some of your favorite back to school read alouds for the library?
