Ice Cream Storytime!

The first Park North Summer Storytime is this week!

Here’s the plan –

Theme: Ice Cream

1. Welcome

2. Read Curious George goes to an Ice Cream Shop

3. Fingerplay: 5 Little Ice Cream Cones

5 little ice cream cones so good to eat.
The first one said, “I’m a summer time treat,”
The second one said, “It’s such a hot day,”
The third one said, “I’m melting away.”
The fourth one said, “Don’t lose your top!”
The fifth one said, “Oh dear,”

This is a yoga game (during the school year, when I read to the Park North kids, I incorporated some yoga into the storytime, which I will continue to do throughout the summer). I play some upbeat music for kids to “jog” to (I may end up just having them dance in place instead of jog. The space is kind of small). Throughout the song, I will say FREEZE. They should freeze in a yoga pose we’ve learned. When I say MELT, they will pretend like they are ice cream and melt to the floor. Then, I will say JOG (or DANCE) and they will continue till the end of the song. The circle part comes in when there is space to jog, you jog in a circle. I will use a song from Secret Agent 23 Skidoo – one of my most favorite hip-hoppers for kids.

4. Poem – “Eighteen Flavors” Shel Silverstein

Eighteen luscious, scrumptious flavors
Chocolate, lime and cherry,
Coffee, pumpkin, fudge banana
Caramel cream and boysenberry.
Rocky road and toasted almond,
Butterscotch, vanilla dip,
Butter brickle, apple ripple,
Coconut and mocha chip,
Brandy peach and lemon custard,
Each scoop lovely, smooth and round,
Tallest ice cream cone in town,
Lying there (sniff) on the ground.

Craft/snack: Make ice cream! We’ll be making ice cream with Ziplock baggies. I have never actually done this, so I hope it works! I’m using this recipe. As we shake our bags, we’ll be listening to another Skidoo song.

So, there you have it!

PS – Unrelated…if you love to dance and you love 80’s music, you must go to The Breakfast Club in Charlotte. I’ve been there twice now and both times I’ve described as “the best night of my life.”
